Eric and Faith Bruck will run the Chicago Marathon Sunday to raise money for the non-profit Team World Vision.
For the past nine months, Eric and Faith Bruck have been training to run the Chicago marathon. The Brucks will take on the 26.2 challenge Sunday, along with several other Bolingbrook church-goers. Runners from Westbrook Christian Church, Joyful Spirit, Living Water and New Song have teamed up to raise money for Team World Vision, a non-profit that works to help children in Africa and Haiti. The team, which trains together each week, hopes to raise $40,000 for a water harvesting project in its sister community in Tanzania. More than 40 people raised $33,000 last year for the project. A breast cancer survivor is one of 52 Bolingbrook church members raising money for Team World Vision by taking part in the Chicago Half Marathon or Marathon.
Plainfield resident Beckie Fry wants to make one thing clear. “I’m not a runner,” the 47-year-old mom and breast cancer survivor said. But that’s not stopping her from taking on the 16th annual Chicago Half Marathon and Hyundai Hope on Wheels 5K. Fry will join 50 others as they take part in the Sept. 9 half-marathon to raise money for Team World Vision, a non-profit that works to help children in Africa and Haiti. While hitting the big 4-0 might instill dread in some people, Dave Fischer is taking it in stride. “Turning 40 always seems like it’s such a big deal,” said the Romeoville resident and director of elementary ministries at Bolingbrook’s Westbrook Christian Church. “So I thought I’d do something crazy instead of having it being a negative thing.” Fischer will celebrate his birthday this Saturday by running 40 miles at Waterfall Glen in Darien in order to get 40 children sponsored through Team World Vision. “It's a 9.5 mile loop and I'll run it four times and then tack on a couple miles at the end,” Fischer said. “Thirty-five other people will come out to run or bike different sections of the course. It's not a race, just kind of a fun run.” …

Imagine having no running experience whatsoever. None. Nada. Zip. Now imagine having to train for an entire marathon. Now, imagine having to raise a couple thousand dollars in the process. Sound tough? Not for a dedicated group of Bolingbrook residents, who will culminate a year’s worth of training—and fundraising—this Sunday at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Dave Fischer, the director of children and student ministry at Westbrook Christian Church, spearheads the group. And as of Thursday night, the team just hit their $30,000 fundraising goal, all of which will go to help fund water projects in Magamba, Tanzania. “The best part of it is that quite a few people that ran aren’t marathoners at all,” Fischer said. “And half are people …
